Frequently asked questions

Some of your most frequent questions, answered.

What is the SmarTest® Patch?

The SmarTest® Patch is a self-adhesive device that absorbs sweat to detect the presence of drugs in an individual's system. Designed for prolonged sample collection, its tamper-evident construction makes it a dependable testing solution for various forensic use entities, including courts, parole officers and other criminal justice applications.

How does the SmarTest® Patch work?

When an individual uses drugs, the parent drug metabolizes in the body and is distributed throughout the system, including the sweat. The Patch when affixed to the skin, utilizes an absorbent pad to gather sweat during its wear period. The absorbent pad is then sent to an approved lab for analysis.

Patches are designed for extended wear to ensure a sufficient testing sample, with a standard patch having a wear period of 7-10 days.

What is the drug detection capability of the SmarTest® Patch?

The standard panel of the SmarTest® Patch detects 11 drugs of abuse, while an expanded panel to include opiates.

What is the construction of the SmarTest® Patch?

The SmarTest® Patch is comprises of an absorbent pad, and a transparent film sealed on the skin with hypoallergenic adhesive. The adhesive and film protect the absorption pad from contaminants and is tamper-evident.

How can I ensure the integrity of the SmarTest® Patch?

Each Patch is printed with a unique ID number that is recorded at the time of application on the chain of custody form. This number is then referenced at the time of removal to ensure no replacements or substitutions have been made. Patches with mismatched ID numbers or signs of tampering should be discarded and not sent for testing.
